Office of Undergraduate Studies

The Office of Undergraduate Studies monitors the academic progress of all students. The office supervises and coordinates academic support services and student advising. Academic retention of students is a priority of the Office of Undergraduate Studies. The Deans work with faculty to establish, interpret and enforce all academic policies and procedures related to students. In addition, the Office of Undergraduate Studies works with faculty to develop and enhance curricular offerings. The Deans help to coordinate activities of many of the campus-wide honor societies.

The Dean of Undergraduate Studies reports to the Provost and is responsible for the supervision of off-campus study programs, the Learning Resources Center, The Office of Assessment of Student Learning and Development, and the College Honors Program. The Dean works primarily with senior students and is responsible for monitoring their academic progress. The Dean works with others on campus to identify opportunities including external scholarships, fellowships, awards, graduate and professional school options for students, especially seniors. The Dean has supervisory responsibility for two Associate Deans who work with first year students, sophomores and juniors.

NEWS: Associate Dean Receives NSF Appointment

Carmen Sidbury, Ph.D., associate dean for sophomore and junior studies, has received a prestigious, one-year appointment as program director in the Division of Graduate Education of the National Science Foundation. Dr. Sidbury's role involves reviewing NSF proposals and managing the awards selection process. The first African-American female to earn a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Sidbury served as an assistant dean in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington before joining Spelman in September 2007. Her NSF appointment begins Monday, August. 24.


 

The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies reports to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. She monitors first-year through junior advising, coordinates activities associated with student exchange programs, and works closely with various offices of the College to insure appropriate services and opportunities for underclasswomen. A major responsibility of the Associate Dean is the planning and coordination of first year seminar and sophomore assembly.

Specific Responsibilities of the Associate Dean:

Dr. Baxter is responsible for monitoring the academic progress of first-year students, coordinating the First Year Seminar Program, supervising the Academic Advising Program for first-year students, and coordinating the Early Warning Program.
